Indonesian steel manufacturer to export to Malaysia, Asean

Indonesian steel manufacturer, PT Saranacentral Bajatama (BAJA) plans to market its products to Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand.

The move is to take advantage of the low import tariffs established under the Asean Free Trade Agreement (AFTA).

BAJA president director Handaja Susanto said with the market expansion, he expected exports to account for about 20 per cent of the company's sales.

"We will export our galvanized and saranalume (aluminum-zinc coated steel) products.

"We have had talks with several potential buyers as there are many construction projects ongoing in neighbouring countries, including Myanmar," Susanto was quoted as saying by The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

Under AFTA's Common Effective Preferential Tariff scheme, all 10 Asean member countries agreed to lower import tariffs to between 0% and 5% beginning January 2010.

The Asean market is expected to boost BAJA's export income to between US$1 million and US$2 million this year.
